simple jquery function not working

Do I need to manually include jquery? (I was under the impression that jquery was now integrated with edge include)

Or am I missing something here?

Simple test case:

I have a rectangle "button" and an element "image".

for the button click trigger I have this code:

sym.$("image").fadeToggle();

And nothing happens. Same for fadeOut() or other common jquery functions. (but sym.$("image").show(); works)
