More information.
I tried recreating the layout in InDesign and then exporting to PDF. Same results -- the solid color area turned white in the PDF.
Then for the solid color area, I tried using a two-color gradient with the same color on both ends of the gradient. Now when I save as PDF, the color is correct.
Very strange. Can anyone help explain this?
