If you'd like to keep your arrow shape "live" you could use an "Arrowhead" stroke and set the stroke as an "Opacity Mask" in the "Transparency" panel.

I just realized an "Art Brush" would be better than a "Pattern Brush" for the blend brush to insure the blend does not repeat along the stroke:
