if the visual waveform is missing, you can toggle it on and off from the timeline wrench tool icon, "show audio waveform".
if the audio itself is missing, and no audio during playback, if you open the media files in the project bin do they still have sound? did this happen just once or does this happen with older projects, or new projects?
