that gives me something like the bottom line. In the bottom line, the colors are correct, but the distances between colors seem to follow the string linearly from left to right rather than preserving the relative distances by following the curve of the string (which would look more like the line above it). Notice how the second to last blue segment is very long in the original wavy line, but very short with the gradient created with swatches.
