Manage PS CC layers like you do in PS Elements 11?

I just recently upgraded to PS CC from Elements 11. So far so good. One thing that I absolutely hate though is that I can't just double click a layer to adjust the size, move, or edit text. I'm scrolling up and down the layers panel over and over looking for a specific layer to make adjustments. Is there a way to set my layers so that I can just double click on something within the project and move it around or edit the text without having to go search for the layer on the layer panel? I am generally using CC for graphic work so we're talking multiple layers on a project. I merge visible everything I can so that there are less layers but a lot of things I need to be able to move for an orders specifications.  When I am doing printable chalkboard Birthday signs, there's so much text that I have no patience for all the scrolling down 50 layers so I switch back to Elements for those. I would love to be able to do everything in PS CC without feeling like it takes me 5x as long as it would to do it in Elements. Is there something I can check? Uncheck? Enable?
