What a genius! I think you've successfully identified the problem. It explains everything - this is why the problem only occurs with Audition (which is a recorder as well as a player) and then only when input and output are the same, which occurs only when the ASIO driver or ASIO4ALL are selected.
With this in mind I went back to ASIO4ALL and opened the control panel and did some experiments. And guess what, I found a setting that works! The trick is to disable the input so that Audition is no longer seeing a conflict between the bit depths of the input and output. Here's what I mean:
So you've identified the problem. But is there a solution that will enable true ASIO playback using the Violectric ASIO driver? This driver does have a control panel but it doesn't have the same options as the ASIO4ALL panel.
I think you've already discovered the best solution. However you look at it, Vio's ASIO driver has a few questions to answer (as I've already hinted...) and there's an incredibly good chance that this will be the most stable solution until they re-write it properly.
Look on the bright side. It works!
